Morning Routine

My morning routine requires my 4th graders to be responsible for several things. This causes some degree of chaos that makes taking attendance difficult. I developed a simple Notebook activity that helped with this process.
The page is divided into three sections. In the morning, I open the file and all of the students' names are in the "Absent" section. As the students are taking care of their morning business, they have to go to the board and move their name to the section that coresponds to the type of lunch they would like to have that day.







After all students have moved their names, I can see how many lunches need to be ordered and who is absent. This frees me up to answer questions and prepare for the first lesson of the day.

The students love being able to come to the board and manipulate their names.





You could also use this to have students track their progress in the Writing Process, have one section for each of the steps. Students can move their name to the next step in the process as they move on.
